Essential Obstetric (Mother) and Neonatal(Newborn) Care (EONC) are training courses for doctors, clinical officers and midwives and aims to address the major causes of maternal and neonatal deaths and morbidity: – Haemorrhage, Sepsis, Eclampsia, Obstructed Labour, Miscarriage and Newborn resuscitation. EONC courses are used widely in Africa and have been proven effective. The EONC course uses a mixture of adult learning techniques – lectures, inter-active scenarios, practical skills and drills training. Included in the programme are :-
- Adult resuscitation using the ABC process – airway, breathing, circulation
- Management of Shock & Sepsis
- Resuscitation of Newborn
- Eclampsia and Severe Pre-eclampsia
- Partogram and obstructed Labour (prevention of obstetric fistula)
- Assisted Vaginal Delivery
- Management of Miscarriage
- To improve maternal and neo-natal health through training of midwives, clinical officers and doctors
- EONC improves the skilled birth attendant’s knowledge, skills, performance and capacity to recognize and manage emergencies.
- Increased access to quality health services for the public, as these skills can be applied in rural areas.
- To develop training capacity in South Sudan by identifying and training facilitators and faculty to enable the continued delivery of high quality training locally and facilitate the extension of such training to rural areas
- To work in partnership with South Sudanese government-run health services, hospitals and primary care centers and health staff training facilities.
- To contribute to and partner with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of South Sudan postgraduate training programme, to partner and contribute to both undergraduate and in-service midwifery training
